Thorne Dreyer's guests on Rag Radio are Erika Wurth and Timothy Kuhner, authors of two very different books but both very relevant to our times.
Erika T. Wurth's novel, "Crazy Horse's Girlfriend," was published by Curbside Splendor. Her collection of poetry, "Indian Trains," was published by The University of New Mexico's West End Press. Wurth teaches creative writing at Western Illinois University and has been a guest writer at the Institute of American Indian Arts. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in numerous journals, such as Boulevard, Drunken Boat, and Southern California Review. She is Apache/Chickasaw/Cherokee and was raised outside of Denver.
"Crazy Horse's Girlfriend" is about Margaritte, "a sharp-tongued, drug-dealing, sixteen-year-old Native American floundering in a Colorado town crippled by poverty, unemployment, and drug abuse." Margaritte "dreams that she and her unreliable new boyfriend can move far beyond the bright lights of Denver that float on the horizon before the daily suffocation of teen pregnancy eats her alive."
Timothy Kuhner is the author of "Capitalism v. Democracy: Money in Politics and the Free Market Constitution," published by Stanford University Press. Kuhner is Associate Professor at Georgia State, teaching mainly in the areas of international and comparative law. While teaching Anglo-American Law at the University of Navarra in Spain, Kuhner researched the role of money in politics in Western European democracies. Educated at Bowdoin College and Duke Law School, he brings a wide-ranging, critical perspective to the study of democratic integrity.
"Capitalism v. Democracy" "offers the key to understanding why corporations are now considered citizens, money is political speech, limits on corporate spending are a form of censorship, democracy is a free market, and political equality and democratic integrity are unconstitutional constraints."
